Free School proposals in Hornsey

I have just heard about this meeting, which is tomorrow/today, governors may want to go:

A meeting has been called by Islington NUT to form a campaign group to oppose the bids by two separate groups applying to open a free school on the former Ashmount primary school site on Hornsey Lane.

Because of its location right on the Islington/Haringey border any new free school would impact on both Islington and Haringey schools. One of the bids is for an all-through free school so if approved would compete with both primary and secondary schools in the two boroughs.

One of the bids is from the Steiner Group who want to establish an all-through (3-18) Steiner school on the site. The other bid is from two companies – Bellevue Education and Place Group. Bellevue Education run private, for-profit, schools in the UK and Switzerland. It currently owns and operates eight schools in the UK and two international boarding schools in Switzerland. It is opening a free school in Balham in September and has partnered with A.C. Grayling’s private university, the New College of the Humanities, in a bid to open a free school in Camden in 2014.

The meeting is taking place on Wednesday 13th February, at the Archway Methodist Centre (just over the road from Archway Tower), starting at 6pm.

Although the meeting has been called by Islington NUT it is open to all teachers, parents, governors, Heads and concerned individuals in Haringey and Islington and it will be important for any campaign to reflect a broad alliance. Please advertise this meeting widely to your contacts.
